Torrential rain and rapidly melting snow triggered extreme flooding and mudslides in Yellowstone National Park, destroying bridges and roads.
All five park entrances were closed to inbound traffic for the first summer since a series of devastating wildfires in 1988.
Some of the worst damage hit the northern reaches of the park, where flooding cut off access to Gardiner, Montana, a small town of roughly 900 people, leaving many residents and visitors isolated with no means of escape.
